Trusted expertise

All of our dentists are highly experienced and able to treat teeth grinding conditions using mouthguard splints.

For cases that involve muscle relaxing injections, treatment will be carried out by one of our Principals, Dr Meera Vekaria (GDC No. 229393), or Dr Chirag Patel (GDC No. 103915).

What is bruxism?

Bruxism (teeth grinding)is a very common condition, though many of the people it affects are unaware as it usually happens during sleep. Its occurrence can be occasional for some, while for others it can develop into a regular, unconscious habit that can have a significant detrimental impact on their oral health.

If left untreated, bruxism can cause the premature wearing down of the outer, protective tooth surface, leading to serious damage and discomfort. If you suspect that you are suffering from teeth grinding then it is important to talk to your dentist as soon as possible.

What we can do to help

We offer two treatment options for teeth grinding. These can be used independently or in conjunction with each other.

Michigan Splint / Tanner Splint

These mouthguards are worn at night and protect teeth from the impact of the pressure caused by grinding or clenching. The Michigan splint is designed to protect the upper arch of teeth, and the Tanner splint the lower arch.

Muscle Relaxing Injections

We can also offer muscle relaxing injections for appropriate cases. This alleviates jaw discomfort by relaxing the masseter muscle and many patients find it highly effective at reducing the associated pain and symptoms.

Teeth grinding FAQs

Why is it important to not to ignore teeth grinding?

If the condition is left untreated it can go on to cause significant health issues such as:

  • Severe headaches and muscle pain
  • Tooth loss
  • Receding gums
  • Sensitivity while drinking or eating
  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Bone deterioration around the jaw joint
What is the main cause of adult bruxism?

Stress is typically a key factor in adult teeth grinding cases, although there may well be other contributing causes.

Your dentist will gather as much information about your symptoms as possible and take into account any other potential factors that may be contributing to the issue.

How common is child bruxism?

Around 15 to 33% of children experience this condition at some point, most commonly during sleep.

Occurrences typically happen during two specific phases: when the baby teeth first emerge and later on when the permanent teeth appear. This problem usually resolves once these teeth become established.

The reason for this remains unclear, though there are various popular theories. These include misaligned teeth, lack of proper contact between the upper and lower teeth, general health problems, insufficient nutrients, or psychological factors linked to anxiety.

The grinding of baby teeth should generally not cause concern, although it can result in discomfort and potential issues such as headaches, tooth erosion, and TMJ disorder. If you notice signs of tooth wear or your child experiences sensitivity or pain, you should talk to your dentist as soon as possible.
