What are dental veneers?

The treatment is extremely popular and effective, as it is able to change the colour, shape and size of teeth in one procedure. At London City Smiles we offer two different types of veneers, each with their own benefits.

Porcelain veneers are the premium quality option, due to their superior durability and the material’s very close resemblance to natural tooth enamel. Composite veneers are a great, cost-effective alternative that can also achieve great-looking results.

Your dentist will be happy to talk you through the advantages of each at your consultation.

Dental veneer FAQs

How long do veneers last?

If looked after properly, veneers can last for many years. Porcelain veneers are the most durable and long-lasting option, typically lasting for over ten years.

Composite veneers generally have a shorter life span of around five to seven years.

Both options will last longer the better they are maintained. Make sure to avoid whatever foods your dentist suggests in the first two weeks post-treatment so your mouth can recover properly.

How long do they take to fit?

Two treatment appointments are generally required for porcelain veneers, but the actual fitting at the second visit will take a very short amount of time. The veneers are individually crafted in a laboratory, so there can be a gap of one to three weeks between the two appointments.

Composite veneers are much quicker, with the treatment usually carried out within one appointment.

Can veneers be removed?

Veneers are considered an irreversible treatment due to the removal of some of the natural tooth structure before they are placed. They will therefore need to be replaced rather than simply removed.

Do veneers stain?

Porcelain veneers are very resistant to staining from smoking or drinking coffee, tea or red wine. While composite veneers are more likely to stain as time passes, they are still more resistent to discolouration than natural tooth enamel.

Will the new veneers match my existing teeth?

Both porcelain and composite veneers can be coloured to match your natural tooth shade. However, many patients choose a lighter shade for their veneers and then have the rest of their teeth whitened for a brighter smile.

What’s the best way to look after veneers?

Veneers generally require the same care and attention as natural teeth. This includes daily brushing and flossing, as well as regular dental check-ups and hygienist appointments.

If you suffer from bruxism (more commonly known as teeth grinding) a mouthguard can be worn at night to protect your veneers from damage.
